The 3 Ways to Be More Productive When You Work From Home

by Suzanne M. Harvey

Home Office

So many of us are working from home either full or part time. Do you struggle with making the most of your time when at home? Are you as productive as you want to or need to be? These are 3 ways that I have turned working at home into the most productive way to work.

Designate a Space

Some people think working from home is you, in your pjs on the couch with your laptop. Boy doesn’t that sound amazing! Except we both know you won’t be so productive that way. So create a space that is designated as your work area. This could be a built in area in the kitchen, the corner of a guest bedroom or a dedicated office in your home. Just make sure that it is clear that when you are in this space it is time to work.

Set Your Hours

Have you ever heard this? “Wow it must be nice to work from home. You can get your laundry done and dinner on the table”. Ha!! The household chores can be a real distraction when working from home. It is easy to get in the habit of taking ‘breaks’ to throw in some laundry or do the dishes, but those little breaks add up fast. Before you know it you are at the end of the day and got nothing done. The easiest solution is to set your work hours. Make sure to include a break for lunch – and take it. Setting these hours and sticking to them will help you stay on task and be more productive. Plus it will help you know when to shut it down and quit for the day, making for a happier home life.

Get Ready for the Day

While it sounds great to spend the day in your pjs working from home, I haven’t found it to work very well. For most of us, we need to get up and be ready for the day. So set the alarm, get up and get dressed. This simple thing of getting dressed and ready for the day will put your mind in work mode (instead of chill mode) and will make you much more productive.

These 3 steps have taken my days working at home to the next level and made me more productive for my clients. Hope they help you up your work at home game.
