How You Can Avoid the 4 Most Common Skincare Mistakes
by Suzanne M. Harvey
Did you know there are some common skincare mistakes that we all make? Did you know that you could get even better results by avoiding them? Let’s face it, sometimes it is hard to know if we are taking care of our skin the right way. We are overwhelmed with constantly changing information on the internet & social media (hello TikTok). It can be hard to wade through all the information and know what’s ‘right’ or ‘wrong’. There are some common mistakes though and we have all made them at some point. If we can avoid them it give us a better chance of getting the results we want from our efforts to look & feel better. And I am here to help you avoid the most common skincare mistakes.
Mistake #1 – Not Using Your Products Consistently
I promise there is no magic pill or cream that will instantly make you look younger. Your best bet to get the results you want from your products is to use them and use them consistently. It’s just like the eating or exercise plan. There are no shortcuts for doing the actual work. So getting more consistent with using your products is the best first step. Set your goal to use your products once a day for 5 days a week to get you heading in the right direction.
Mistake #2 – Not Wearing Your SPF
You will always hear this from every single dermatologist, influencer and beauty expert. Sunscreen EVERYDAY is a must! I know you may be thinking “but it’s almost fall, and I am not laying out in the sun”. The reality is that our skin is damaged by UV rays from the sun every day, all year long. And if you are like me you can’t just put any old sunscreen on your face. So look for moisturizers, tinted primers & foundations that include your sunscreen (SPF 30 or more is recommended). This way it becomes part of your daily routine without you having to add one more product.
Mistake #3 – Not Using Your Products in the Right Order
It is easy to want to buy the latest skincare product that targets your main skin concern – hello wrinkle cream! But the truth is if you aren’t cleaning your face properly these spot treatments will not be effective. I know that’s not what you want to hear but if you take the time for a few steps with the right products in the right order you will get much better results and not waste your money. That’s a win win in my book. For more information on what order to use your products for the best results check out “How to Maximize Your Skincare Results”.
Mistake #4 – Not Giving Your Products Time to Work
This last one is the hardest for all of us…you have to give it time. None of us wants to wait to get results. We want the best results and we want them NOW! If you read the label on your favorite product most will say ‘results in 6-12 weeks’. And if you are using good quality products you will see results over time with consistent use (see #1). Giving your products a chance to do what they were designed to do will be worth it. Make sure to take that ‘no makeup’ selfie before you start so you can really see the difference over time.
I hope you find these tips helpful to avoid the 4 most common skincare mistakes. This is not all or nothing here. That’s not what I am about. No shaming here. Just a little encouragement to take steps in the right direction to get what you want out of your products to get the results you want and save money along the way. Cheers to clearer, brighter skin and more confidence & joy!
