I love when the seasons change and we can get outside. Living in the mid west comes with long, cold winters. Now that the weather is changing we are running outside like we have escaped from jail. But my fair skin needs some care and attention before the sun hits it. A little bit of effort and your skin can be summer ready too. Check out these 5 simple ways you can protect your skin from the sun while still enjoying the outdoors.

#1 – Wear Your Sunscreen

I know you are not surprised by this one. We have heard for years that we need to wear our sunscreen everyday. And not just on our faces. As the temps rise we are wearing shorts & t-shirts with short sleeves so even more skin is exposed. Make sure you get your sunscreen on from head to toe before heading out. If you are out for extended periods of time make sure to reapply your sunscreen. Every 2 hours you should reapply your SPF and make sure you are using a product with an SPF of 30 or higher for best protection.

#2 – Wear a Hat

Whether you prefer a big floppy sun hat or a baseball cap, this is a perfect way to add extra protection to your face when out in the sun. And with so many great looking options it can be a fun accessory to your outfit. This a simple solution to keep those damaging rays off your face. And it is the simplest way to fight off those signs of aging – sun spots, wrinkles and fine lines!

#3 – Cover Up

I know this seems crazy but covering your skin with long sleeves and higher necklines is good idea too. I know what your thinking “It’s so hot” but many clothing lines are now developing items that have SPF built in as well as light weight fabrics that provide cooling too. Selecting a few pieces that can protect your skin is worth it to protect you from sun damage.

#4 – Pick the Right Time

When you are in the sun can have a big impact too. Try to avoid full sun exposure during the hottest part of the day (10 a – 2pm). The sun rays are strongest during this time and can cause the most damage. By arranging your time in the sun to early morning or later in the day you can greatly reduce the potential damage and risk of sunburn.

#5 – Moisturize

After a day in the sun, take a little time in the evening to give your skin some more love. Apply a luxurious moisturizer to rehydrate and replenish your skin. As you skin cells recharge over night this extra layer of moisture will soak in and have you feeling relax and ready for another day of sunshine. Plus who doesn’t need some extra self care time.

By using the 5 simple ways to take care of your skin, you will be ready for all the summer fun. Without adding to the damage you will feel confident that you are taking care of you. And you will continue to hold off the aging process a little bit longer. Sounds like a winning situation to me!
